Drip Irrigation Maintenance: How to Spot and Fix Hidden Tube Leaks

Arizona heat, soil movement, aging fittings, and landscape work can all stress drip tubing and emitters. The difficult part is that a small failure may stay hidden beneath decomposed granite until a plant declines, a wet spot appears, or the water bill changes.
A damaged line can waste water every time that zone runs. A deliberate zone-by-zone walkthrough helps separate a broken emitter or lateral line from a valve, pressure, controller, or coverage problem.
The 3-Step Monthly Drip Pressure Test
Step 1: Check the Water Meter Dial
Turn off all faucets, washing machines, and indoor water users. Find your city water meter box in your front yard sidewalk. Look closely at the small red star or blue triangle "low flow indicator" wheel. If it’s spinning while everything is off, you have an active leak.
Step 2: Do a Visual Walkthrough Under Pressure
Manually activate your irrigation system valve at your controller. Walk your yard gravel paths. Look for these red flags:
- Spongy, muddy spots in the granite or soil
- Hissing or bubbling sounds under the surface
- Washed-out or sunken gravel areas
- Desert shrubs that look unusually dark green or have pooling water at their base
Step 3: Fix Broken Emitters Fast
To replace a damaged emitter, peel back the granite, cut out the cracked poly tube portion using clean shears, install a standard 1/2-inch or 1/4-inch push-fit barb coupling, and insert a new pressure-compensating emitter (we recommend 2 Gallons Per Hour for established desert plants).
