Winter Overseeding Guide for Phoenix Lawns

In the desert valley of Phoenix and Laveen, turf care follows a unique dual-season rhythm. Unlike cold-climate grasses, our warm-season Hybrid Bermuda grass thrives in summer's blistering 115°F heat but goes completely yellow and dormant once night temperatures consistently drop below 55°F (usually in late October).

To maintain a rich, golf-course-style emerald green lawn during our gorgeous desert winters, homeowners perform a process called winter overseeding. This involves planting cool-season annual or perennial Ryegrass directly into your existing Bermuda turf.

The 4 Critical Steps to Successful Winter Seeding

1. The "Scalp & Prep" (Mid to Late October)

Before laying seed, the summer Bermuda must be thinned. We drop mower blades to scalping height (around 1/4 inch), removing the leafy canopy and exposing the soil surface. This allows Ryegrass seed to establish direct contact with the soil. Core aeration during this step increases seed germination rates.

2. Even Distribution (Sowing)

We use professional calibrated drop and broadcast seeders. Sowing at a rate of 12 to 15 lbs per 1,000 square feet ensures dense coverage. We apply a thin, clean layer of compost mulch on top to trap moisture and protect seeds from local desert birds.

3. The Intensive Watering Program (Days 1 - 14)

Ryegrass requires constant moisture to germinate. Set your sprinkler controller to water 4 times a day (typically 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:30 PM) for short 3-5 minute cycles. The goal is to keep the top seedbed damp, not soggy. Avoid watering after dark to prevent fungal infections.

4. First Cut and Transition (Day 21+)

Once Ryegrass shoots reach 3 inches, perform the first cut with sharp mower blades set to 2 inches. After this first mowing, gradually scale back your watering schedules to standard winter settings (deep watering once every 4 to 7 days).
